Lama Chopa, also known as Guru Puja, is a profound practice
of guru devotion and offering to the spiritual guide,
special to the Gelugpa tradition. During this practice,
practitioners pay homage to the lineage of lamas, starting
with Shakyamuni Buddha and extending to their present
teachers. The practice involves making heartfelt offerings
and requests for blessings to attain the same realizations
as these great masters.
Tsog means "gathering," and it is performed alongside Lama
Chopa. It is a practice of purification of negative karma
and the accumulation of positive energy or merit. During the
puja, extensive prayers are recited to affirm one's
commitment to the spiritual path and seek inspiration from
the teachers.
Together, Lama Chopa and Tsog create a powerful practice for
purifying the mind, accumulating merit, and deepening one's
connection to the lineage of enlightened beings.
Everybody is welcome to attend!
You are encouraged to bring offerings such as flowers,
food or monetary contributions to create vast merit and
benefit countless beings.

This Guru Puja with Tsog commemorates His Eminence the 104th
Ganden Trisur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin, who showed the
aspect of passing away on September 26, 2025 at Sera Je
Monastery, Bylakkupe, India.
H.E. Ganden Trisur Rinpoche was a revered teacher to
thousands of Sangha members and students around the
world. The Bay Area community was blessed to receive his
teaching on the Heart Sutra
in 2014.
Appointed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in
2017, His Eminence served as the 104th Ganden
Tripa until November 2024. The position of Ganden Tripa,
meaning “Holder of the Ganden Throne,” designates the head
of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Unlike
reincarnation lineages, the Ganden Tripa is an appointed
position, held for seven years, and alternately filled by
the Jangtse Choje and the Sharpa Choje.
