Most modern societies do an excellent job of hiding away the
reality of death. When on top of this we lead a busy life,
we may not give much thought to death until we actually
encounter it face to face. We then find ourselves
overwhelmed and traumatized by the diagnosis of a terminal
illness or the loss of someone close to us. We may also fear
that thinking about death will make it happen or else take
the joy out of living. But, in reality, when we actively
think about death and prepare for it, we find more peace,
happiness, and fulfillment in our lives and our fear of
death disappears..
This course was created by FPMT to provide practical ways
for thinking about preparing for your own and others’ death.
It is suitable for anyone — Buddhist or not — who is
interested in learning about death and dying from a Buddhist
perspective.
Especially given these extraordinarily trying times, with
the pandemic and natural disasters, as a result of having
done this course, you may feel more prepared, calm, and
confident.
Gen Don has received teachings from many
esteemed lamas in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition including
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Ribur
Rinpoche, Choden Rinpoche, and Khensur Jampa Tegchok. In
1998 he attended the FPMT's Masters Program of Buddhist
Studies in Sutra and Tantra, a seven-year residential
study program conducted at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute in
Tuscany, Italy.
He successfully completed all five
subjects of this program in 2004, receiving an FPMT final
certificate with high honors. In 2015, he had the honor of
being selected to lead the renowned November Course, a one
month teaching and meditation retreat held annually at
Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal.
This weekend intensive will use the FPMT book Heart Advice
for Death and Dying (available from the FPMT store).
