Everyday Emptiness: Practical Paths toward Peace
Tuesday, June 27, 2017
7:00pm – 9:00pm
6:00pm – 7:00pm: Light Dinner with Guy Newland
Join us for an engaging evening with Guy Newland, Ph.D.,
scholar of Tibetan Buddhism and professor at Central
Michigan University.
Dr. Guy Newland will share how we all hear how central
"emptiness" is to Buddhist practice. It is,
after all, the ultimate truth and that which we should be
trying to realize.
But most times, it really sounds like something extra, some
extremely complicated thing thrown on top of the stressful
complexities of daily life.
Dr. Guy Newland will simplify these concepts to ground
students towards practical applications for our daily lives.
He will delve into:
- What are some examples that allow us to get a deeper sense of what emptiness means?
- How can we get closer to understanding things realistically without worrying about concepts of emptiness at all?
- As distinct from what we might some day understand and realize, how much—and in what ways—can these Buddhist ideas actually help us in our lives right now?
Guy Newland is Professor of Religion of the Department of
Philosophy and Religion at Central Michigan University,
where he has taught since 1988. He holds a Ph.D. in the
history of religions from the University of Virginia,
where he studied Tibetan Buddhism with Jeffrey
Hopkins. Newland has also studied with many Tibetan
scholars in the U.S. and India.
He is a translator and co-editor of the three-volume
translation The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment,
and is the author of several books on Tibetan Buddhism,
including The Two Truths,
Appearance and Reality,
and Introduction to Emptiness.
More recently he has translated and edited From Here to Enlightenment
by the Dalai Lama and founded the Central Michigan Sangha.
