Discovering Buddhism, Module 13

Introduction to Tantra

with Emily Hsu

Tuesdays, 7:00pm – 9:00pm
August 18 – September 22, 2015
No class on September 8
(5 classes)
Practice day on September 29

In this module, we will learn what Buddhist tantra is, how it works, and some of the main elements of tantric practice. We will get a broad overview of the four classes of tantra, learn how to practice simple tantric methods, and discuss how to integrate the practices of tantra with lam-rim meditation for optimal results.

We will also explore such questions as:

  • What is the basis for practicing tantra, and why is this important?
  • What are the essential differences between the sutra and the tantra paths to enlightenment?
  • What are the three bodies of a buddha?
  • What is a “deity” in the context of tantric practice?
  • What is deity-yoga?

Lama Yeshe says:

According to Buddhist teachings, no matter how confused or afflicted we may be at the moment, the underlying and essential nature of our being is clear and pure....And the ultimate purpose of all spiritual practices...is to uncover and make contact with this essentially pure nature.

Tantric practice is a particularly powerful way to do this.

Everyone is welcome!

Although it is part of the Discovering Buddhism program, anyone is welcome to attend — you do not have to have attended previous modules.
