With the power of serenity, your mind–like a lamp placed where there is no wind–will be unmoved by the winds of discursive thought. With insight, others cannot divert you since you have abandoned the infinite entanglements of bad views. - Stages of Meditation, (Bhavanakrama) by Kamalashila
Course Description:
In this second module of the Discovering Buddhism series, we find out what meditation is and what it is for. How to Meditate [DB2] covers the basic set-up of a meditation session and several different styles of meditation:
-
Stabilizing meditation (calm-abiding)
- Checking meditation (insight)
- Visualization
- Prayer
- Mantra
No special equipment is required for class, but you may wish to bring your own favorite meditation cushion. The center has plenty of mats and quite a few beanbag-style (buckwheat hull) pillows. There are also plenty of chairs for people who have trouble sitting on the floor. We will discuss how to go about setting up a meditation space at home.
